From what I hear, it's hard to animate things using that method...

Which us why they showed none in the demonstrating the Unlimited Detail parts. Polygons won't go away, because they're so much easier to animate with.

That certainly looks interesting, and the visuals on the vid were impressive. Happy. It occurs to me, though, that I recently came across a certain blog post by a certain Swedish developer that puts a bit of a damper on the hype. Wondering

Quote :
to the engineers who worked on this: Great job, I am impressed! But please tell your marketing department to stop lying. ;)

Ouch. XD But anyway, I know very little about such technical matters, so I thought I'd just leave that link for ya and skedaddle.

This...looks.....AWESOME!!!

Amazing work graphics scientist, you finally realized how to go beyond fractal geometry in graphics and stepped up to finally think of how to use the info we have on the detail of atoms and put it into graphics!

Finally they realized that.

It's funny, since we've been doing this for a long time. The problem with atom graphics is that it takes up an obscene amount of memory space and RAM, among other things. Which makes it pretty hard to use this in a decent game unless we finally make home supercomputers.

And really, the polygon system is fine with me, just look at Crysis 2 and other games. They're doing fine without this "New thing" and look wonderful

Do your research, kids.

I do research... Wink

And about the "Home supercomputers" We're workin' on it. Look for "quantum computers".

Very interesting stuff.

As Hutch said...massive amounts of ram and processor speed...they never explained how powerful of specs you need for this...and yet trashed the AMAZING graphics of Crysis 2. Seriously, I found their Graphics pretty amazing. I'm not too excited about this "Revolution" of graphics. Besides...while awesome graphics are nice, it's not the most important thing about a game.

It isn't, more of a retarded marketing department trying to get funding.

And Laser, we can't look into the future since it doesn't apply to us right now. Sure, we might get even more powerful PCs in the future capable of running this kind of graphic setup, but for now. It's entirely impossible to create a full length game with this system and being able to run it.

My Opinion?

This looks shopped.
Sure it's interesting, but remember that not ALL games depend on graphics to be good.
AESTHETICS, PEOPLE
Think of the AESTHETICS!

Also, is it sad to say that I'm acually not all that impressed by this? We already have amazing graphics, y'know, this REALLY isn't necessary.

Gameplay is not the point of this. Graphics is the point of this.

I don't really pretend to know what I'm talking about, but as others have also said, there are massive amounts of issues with this method. Someone quoted Notch in this thread earlier though and pointed those flaws out, so I'm not going to go into detail, but there's the animation problem, and also the massive memory requirement problem.

I do agree, but once we have quantum computers in the near future, this isn't all that far fetched, and not only the QCs but technology is progressing very fast, so I do see this as promising technology for graphics. (Even though I know the graphics aren't the MOST important thing in games). I mean, our transistor count on microchips doubles on average every 18 months, so yeah.

But lazer stop talking about Quantum Computers because they are as big as rooms and they wont sell Quantum computers on every street. So Lazer stop talking about Quantum computers because you at least have to wait 10-20 years untill you will have one at home.

Not exactly...yes it would be a while 'til they're for homes, but I was just showing using a bunch of data for graphics is getting easier and easier every (18 months on average)

So I was just using QCs as an example :P

Now we should get back on topic.

Honestly Lazer, I think you're the one going off topic. The Quantum computer argument is absolute garbage, since we're talking about what this might mean at the present. Right now, August 5th, 2011. And right now it's downright impossible. so please can the QC garbage unless it somehow applies to this thread, because from my view. It doesn't, since the nice man in the video is asking for funding now. Not in twenty years when we MIGHT have more powerful rigs to actually run that kind of graphical setup on.

Okay sure. Although that's not completely true either, it's not impossible, seeing that they HAVE done this (Partially) and that it doesn't take up enough to be too much for super computers razz

Anyway, sorry, I was just giving an example, but I'll stop being a "Fact Nazi"
