Actually, 99942 Apophis is not likely to hit the Earth. While it will certainly pass very close - even lower than some of our very high up satellites, it only has a 0.0004% chance of hitting Earth. And for the record, it's only 270 meters in diameter, as comparison to the 9-kilometer asteroid that supposedly killed the dinosaurs. So even if Apophis does hit us, it probably won't do nearly as much damage (though of course it will do a lot).

| Regardless, it will cause serious environmental damage. It's never the initial blast that kills everything, it's the dust thrown up into the atmosphere that blocks the sun. Lowering temperatures and therefor killing us. However It won't be the theoretical "Decade long winter" That was supposedly after the blast from the first asteroid that hit us. Even then, NASA or any of the other space programs might be able to alter its course if it turns out that it's indeed, going to hit us. - Quote :

Don't be silly, you are aware that the morons who came up with global warming ALSO came up with the nuclear winter theory in the 90's? The simple explanation, which has been proven is that the earths location proportional to the sun is NEVER consistent, it can sometimes be further or closer to the sun. And it's more than likely that we have gotten a little closer to the sun, sure the Ozone layer is fading in some areas, but please. Do some extra research before you immediately figure global warming is correct. Chances are that we'll all either kill ourselves in a nuclear war, asteroids, or we deplete our oil reserves, which would put ourselves into a nuclear war. Most likely

There's actually a lot of evidence to support human activity causing Global Climate Change (not necessarily Global Warming). While I don't think it's completely responsible for every change in the climate, I do believe it's a factor.

| I say the world is more like a living organizim, changing and adapting. Its heating up to get warm, and soon it cool down again. It's like a cycle. But thats my thought on the matter. | |

But thats my thought on the matter. I read a book about that theory, "The Tomorrow Code" by Brian Falkner. The Earth was so much like an organism that it had its own immune system, which was unleashed on humanity. It was a cool book.

| Maybe your right, but either way that much C02 can't be good for the atmosphere.
I don't think we will go dramatically like most people imagine it, maybe a steady decline over a few thousand years or so.

People will be on other planets by then. If we start terraforming Mars now, then we'll be ahead of the game.

We don't have anywhere NEAR the ability to terraform planets. If we did, we could just get rid of the extra CO2 in Earth's atmosphere and we'd be good.

| Yeah, well what's stopping us from terraforming? Can't we just place a few lichens on the planet and wait a few thousand years? | |

| The lichens would die because there is no atmosphere. | |

There's atmosphere on Mars, just not as much as on Earth. Lichens are able to survive in extreme conditions. Their main job is breaking down bare rock into soil that is habitable for plants, for example, on hardened lava. I don't see why it wouldn't work on Mars. It would take a very long time, thousands of years perhaps, but it does seem like a viable option.

We don't have anywhere NEAR the ability to terraform planets. If we did, we could just get rid of the extra CO2 in Earth's atmosphere and we'd be good. They actually have an idea that the same emissions from factories that are harmful to Earth can be used to create a more viable atmosphere for Mars, and once there's an atmosphere there, everything else is then (relatively) much easier.

I know it may not be this simple, but if you place CO2 on Mars, won't that help plants complete photosynthesis?

I know it may not be this simple, but if you place CO2 on Mars, won't that help plants complete photosynthesis? From what I've learned about it, that's the idea. EDIT: Though before plants they would need to put lichen there to break down the rock into soil.

| Exactly. Lichen is the first step, CO2 and plants are the next step. But then where does the water come from? That's always what stumps me... | |

| Mars has a large amount of Permafrost near the pole, the C02 could freeze that.
I think it would be nice if Mars became a Nature Preserve (once terraformed), that would solve many species's declining habitat.
EDIT: your right, there is a atmosphere, that was somewhat of a mistake on my part, what I meant is the atmosphere isn't very good.
Also, what about Solar Flares and the fact that Mars's Molten Iron Core (that sustains life on Earth) is dead?
