Though I'm almost certain none of you have played it, yesterday marked the end of one of my favorite MMO's, Star wars galaxies.
It was shut down after it slowly died for a number of years after the developers basically ruined the game, though I quit about 2 years before this date, I returned to my home server, and my home guild (The equivalent of a clan) before the game finally ended to have some fun and say my goodbyes before the game shut down for good at midnight. I toured the massive cities and creations made by the players, and remembered the stories, the horrific heroic runs, and hilarious moments we all cherished, and we all shared the same grief that all this wonderful player-made content was going to be gone, and gone for good.
It might have had its fair share of problems, it might have completely flopped 6 years in, but this was a game that brought Star wars fans together and gave us the ability to play the way we wanted, either through PVP, making custom quests, building cities, or being a salesperson and selling things to other players, it reached that true Diversity that all MMO's should have, and sadly don't.
I stood in my ship, with a group of friends it was about 2 minutes or so before the game shut down, we all said our farewells, and as the games last 60 seconds counted down on all our HUDs, I made the jump to lightspeed one more time before the game that brought us together, ended. The Adventures and the characters that we had made ourselves, gone for good.
This sounds horrifically nerdy, I know. But I think this game deserves some recognition. I will always have fond memories of this game and the experiences I got out of it.
