PostSubject: Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs   Sat Apr 13, 2013 3:26 am

So, as most of you should know, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is widely regarded as one of the most terrifying horror games of recent times. As a good number of you should also know, a sequel is in the works by the name of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. It looks set to have a very different tone than its predecessor, as it is set in 1899, to The Dark Descent's 1839.

As of now, the only information we have to go on about this game are two trailers, a handful of screenshots (some concept art, some in-game), and several interviews with Frictional. The interviews mention an increased emphasis on enemy AI, nearly complete removal of the ability to pause the game (welp), and a general increase in the horror aspect.

The main reason I'm making this thread is because this game and the concept behind it have kept me fascinated since the reveal of the first trailer. The website ( http://aamfp.com/ ) is getting updated quite frequently as of late, which leads me to believe we may be very close to the release date (currently mentioned as Q2 2013).

The funny thing about this is that I really don't want to play this game. I still haven't finished The Dark Descent, (Cells, you shall forever remain unconquered) but I'm very interested in how this game will turn out. But I mostly want to see the monsters. From the sound of it, they're going to be grotesque pig-human engineered monstrosities.

So yeah, super happy funtime for all! Joyful

I still need to finish the dark descent. Well, since I've watched like a hundred LP's of it: it's kinda been spoiled. I hope someone makes some cool Custom stories for this one with the new materials (most of them are all the same--- save the ones with custom stuff).

So yeah I want to see the new monsters too.

How about the expansion, 'Justine'? There are fewer LP's of that, and it has some brilliant scares in it despite being a short add-on. Happy.

I'm looking forward to this game quite a bit; especially the new AI, which should keep it scary for people who know most of The Dark Descent's tricks by this point. I rather hope we get a definite release date before the end of Q2 2013; they've already pushed it back from Q1 2013. unsure

I did play Justine. It was the first thing I did. Pretty fun.

EDIT: As consolation, here's a Q&A about the game. https://www.facebook.com/notes/amnesia-a-machine-for-pigs/a-machine-for-pigs-qa/363961080374607

Bets that it won't be out until 2014? I'm going to remain cynical until they give us a solid date.

Maybe this is foolish, but I don't think they'll delay it again. In the announcement, they said that they know right around when they'll be ready, and that they're just polishing it. So I think they'll definitely meet the Q3 estimation this time.

If they don't, it'll probably be so they can release it on Halloween. razz

Okay, just found a new little gem that I think you might like.

TheChineseRoom has their own page for A Machine for Pigs, and on it, a soundcloud track entitled "Mors Praematura". Take a listen. I find the intro to be particularly unnerving.

I popped the name of the track into google translate, as well as a phrase someone pointed out in the comments, (memento mori) and found out they translate to "premature death" and "remember the death". Nothing too unexpected.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you guys. happy.

Dear God, an actual Steam Store page with an actual release date.

Toldya they wouldn't push it back again. ^_^

Kinda funny how one of the selling points is "The darkest, most horrific tale ever told in a videogame." I mean yeah, we're all expecting this game to be terrifying, but that statement is just asking for a let-down.

EDIT: First monster picture spotted! Bets this is the one that knocked down the door in the first trailer?

Whoah, the Grunt has really let himself go. O_o I can see him now: sitting on a couch somewhere in Brennenberg Castle, eating a super-size tub of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream, the discarded containers of its predecessors lying scattered all around.

"Daniel... why did you leave?" cry

So Delta, how is it? :P

I'm honestly a bit disappointed, watching LPs and reading reviews. The sanity meter, oil for your lantern, and tinderboxes all seem to be gone, as is that creepy sound effect when a monster is near. From what I can tell from reviews, the game isn't actually all that scary, just atmospheric and unnerving. The monsters were pretty much exactly what I predicted they'd be, and while I've yet to watch a full LP, the story seems to be going in the direction I expected as well.

Reading reviews (and threads on the Steam community page for the game, I don't recommend anyone else do that,) it seems like the story is the game's strongest point. Seeing as that's the case, this really is more of a game for smarter people, who are willing to piece things together. I've seen one to many "Outlast is better than AMFP!" threads, showing that people value jumpscares over a well-paced and unnerving story. Kinda sad honestly. I had high hopes for this game, and while I'm certainly enjoying watching it (and I hope Delta enjoys playing it,) it's just sad to see so many people bashing it. :(

Stripping away the UI was always a stated goal of this game, primarily as an immersion aid — playing through the game, I don't feel removing the sanity meter and inventory took away from the experience: they aren't what make Amnesia what it is.

It's a short game, I having put 5 hours 30 into finishing it (the half-hour being obligatory physics engine chicanery), and while it had enough scares to keep me going the developers were definitely more interested in creating atmosphere and story, which they really succeeded in doing. I think comparing it to Outlast is superficial at best. razz

Oh, and back when I only had the pre-release material to go on I was actually rather cynical about the change in composer from The Dark Descent — I have since been convinced otherwise.

Song's driving me nuts. I know that tune, I've heard it several times, but I'm not entirely sure where (The intro, I mean).
Guess I'm most impressed by the violin work at about a minute in or so, though.
