PostSubject: Behind the Shadows - IC   Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:19 pm

The Elton System. A part of space brimming with resources and life. Many have come to it for the sake of glory, fame and wealth. Corporations have set up mining stations and offices all over the system, followed by the Systems Union the government for the sector.
However not all are satisfied by the resent immigration to the Elton system.
Because where there is money, there is power and where it is power there is corruption.
The corporations doesn't let anything stand in their way, and hires mercenaries, bounty hunters and thieves to give them an edge.
But something else is working in this new wild west.
Working behind the shadows.
_______________________________________________________________________________

This is the IC thread.
Out-Of-Character discussions and sign ups are for the OOC Thread.
The IC story will be seperated through the use of acts. It begins with a short prologue followed by three acts and finished with an ending.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Prologue

The thick grey clouds lay like a blanket over the sky, weeping a heavy rain which splashed down on the muddy plains below. The drops smattered like machinegun fire against the shuttle that flew through the rainstorm. It's elegance and silver shimmering surface was alien to the world it traversed.
In the cargo bay of the elegant shuttle a group of mercs sat silent while feeling the tremors of the storm.
John, a human male was dressed in his armor, his helmet lay on a place to the left of him. Being lost in thoughts, John got jumped up as a voice started to broadcast through a series of loudspeakers.
"Godmorning, my dear... Contractors." A business like voice streamed through. It was the slightest derranged blurring out the differences between male or female.
"You can call me the Informant. I will give you the information you need to accomplish your job, as the professional business men, my contractors hope you are." The genderless voice was carefull not to mention the word mercenary, like if it had a bad taste.
"Some days ago, one of our mining outposts was occupied by a group of terrorists. The mining outpost had then found a very valuable... Asset. My contractors wants you to retake the compound and secure the asset. The asset will be located in a central chamber of the storage area. To get there, you will need to go through the factory complex."
The Informant continued as the shuttle cut through the rain outside.
"The one in charge of this job will be Mr John. No need to worry, he won't get more paid than the rest of you. Also, Cristae our beloved native, have as a security meassure been given a light mech to fuse with. Please leave it in the condition it had before given to you."
The broadcast silenced and left the air to be surrounded by the familiar hum of engines.
John grabbed his helmet and put it on, its visor activated automatically hiding his face for the rest of the mercs. As the ship lost momentum as it became ready to drop of the mercenaries 300 meters from the compound, the loudspeakers sounded again with the Informants voice.
"I forgot, any damage done to the compound will be drawn from your salary. Good luck."
John snorted at the corporation agent, while the shuttle decent.

((It is free for the ones with a dossier on the OOC to post now.))

From a corner of the cargo bay, a green, lanky reptilian creature with an arching neck and a suit of red and white armour collapsed his Raptor machine gun for the uptieth time. He went by the name W3RM. He snorted. It felt like days ago when he was still a contestant on Dreadzone, and sitting in a dark ship while being told how to spend the day didn't do much to convince him that he had truly escaped.

W3RM was his contestant name, and he assumed that the number three indicated that he was the third slug-like creature to compete in the underground combat sport. Other contestants had ridiculous names, trying to be superheroes, but at the end of the day they were all the same when they were looking down the barrel of a gun — Ace Hardlight's gun, more often than not. He was the champion exterminator before he was beaten at his own game. It was hilarious.

Then, the same guy who took down the champion went on to take down the containment fields, freeing all of the contestants. Squidzor, Land Shark, King Claude and W3RM all got away on the same escape shuttle, before they set the dragon-like creature down on some planet in the Elton system. Is was a wet planet, so he didn't mind. It was his kind of battlefield.

In the other corner of the cargo bay, however, a very different creature was in a very different mindset sat glumly. This one had an actual name, though: Maarucye. He was in the mercenary business for years prior to that day, although he was more organic back then. Apart from his right leg, all of his limbs were robotic, and various other parts of his body were replaced with similar prosthetics. He was not looking forward to trekking to the mining outpost in the pouring rain and boggy plains, because it'd probably get in his joints, and it takes ages to clear every grain of dirt from them. Otherwise, they'd scrape and scratch unpleasantly until he did.

He was more armed than the dragon-esque creature mellowing in the opposite corner, even if he also had a weapon that collapsed seemingly out of existence. His was a sniper rifle, and he kept the book-sized pod attached to his left, robotic leg, where he could easily reach it and expand it into a full-sized sniper rifle. On top of that, he had an arm-mounted plasma pulser with three metal claws extruding from the vent, and a plasma sword on his back.

He just wasn't looking forward to walking in the mud, what with his mass. Close to a quarter of a tonne, we was, so he'd be pulling his feet out of the dirt every few seconds. He just sighed, the round, wide lens that was his left eye catching the light.

Arthur sat hunched over on one of the crates, his antenna waving; gathering various smells in the air. His plethora of clawed mandibles twitched and chattered as he looked quizzically around the cargo bay. He began tinkering with the valves and canisters that were attached to his welding gun. He wasn't familiar with anyone here, and he thought it would be best if he payed no mind to them.

Arthur set his gun down, and looked up at the ceiling; his large, pitch black eyes squinted. He let out a low gurgle, and rested his head on the wall. He wasn't entirely sure what he was getting into, but he didn't like it. He was no mercenary, and he thought killing others for money was an unjust thing to do, but he was willing to try anything.

He grabbed his assault rifle, and examined its paint job. It was black, with orange stripes going diagonally down its barrel. It was decorated with small, white Orthopterian symbols, and had four pairs of silver canisters running along the top. His hand ran along the side of the gun, his six digits feeling the cold steel. His facial platting shifted, showing a concerned expression. He wasn't too eager about getting shot at.

Cristae took time to inspect the mech prescribed to her. It was small, but heavily armed, and was designed specifically for swamp exploration. Cris leaped into it's power supply, and began to melt into it. "Kinda small, but I guess it'll do for now" she pondered quietly to herself. As she finished seeping into the bot's system, she began moving the bot around. The mech stalled when commanded to turn sharply, but otherwise it was feasible. "Kinda clunky, aintcha?" she said to herself. "Well, at least you're waterproof" Cristae cringed at the thought of large masses of liquid falling on her body. Melting against your will is VERY uncomfortable.

Cris then had thoughts about their mission. She didn't know anyone else in this vessel, and she certainly doesn't know what's going on outside. After all, she only joined the mercenaries because the civilians, for some reason, became very protective of their copper ever since word got out that a slimefella was living on the streets. The mercs offered her both a position, and, more importantly to Cris, payment in the form of copper alloy. This job seemed like her best option, aside from their reluctance to give her much information about it.

She looked around excitedly at the other mercs aboard the ship. There was quite an abundance of different creatures aboard, some like nothing she's ever seen before. Belonging to a social species, Cris began to socialize with them. "Hey, does anyone know what we're going to be doing when we get outta here?" she openly asked whist waving one of the mech's arms around for attention.

Miles Tekit spent a lot more time examining her gear then trying to socialize with the other recruits. The idea of working alongside with other species or in her case, strangers from another world is so bizzare. Miles does respect them but felt rather uncomfortable. If Miles had been the only human on this team, she might have gone less sane. She wondered how her folks back home were doing. The last time Miles spoke to them was the day she left to join the army. Now Miles Tekit is on a new team and she's looking forward to whatever comes their way. She finished examining her gear and decided to try chat with one of the aliens. There was the slime-like humanoid who waved to one of the bots for help. Then you have the bug whose antennas quiverd with worryment (?). Then lastly there was the green slug dragon and a being that was once organic but now a cyborg. Miles began her conversation.

"Well I don't know what we might be doing once we get out but I'm quite nervous yet excited."

John had heard the slimefella and the fellow human, talk and answered to the questions.
"Around 47 hours ago, the mining facility was overrun by terrorists. A religious group called the 'sons of liberty' took on responsibility. It has something to do with an artifact the miners found. The 'asset' we're suppose to secure."
He looked over the rest of the mercs, while further explaining the situation.
"We will be dropped out of the immediate vicinity of the outpost. The resistance should be fairly easy, as these are not professionals. They got only outdated weapons and tech, but are coldblooded."
The shuttle continued its descent to a small grove of murky trees.

"What we'll be doing," Maarucye said flatly to Miles and Cristae, "is advancing towards a group of armed terrorists in the pissing rain, trying to gain wet, soggy ground while they pick us off from their cosy little cave with mining explosives and pea-shooters."

W3RM looked up at the cyborg creature with his yellow eyes. Jeez, he thought, lighten up. It's not like we've even started yet.

W3RM was looking forward to the mission. Swamps were his speciality, if one were to put it like that. He could swim very well, and he was lithe like an eel. Chances are he'd be able to get to the mining compound by sneaking through the grass and ambushing the Sons of Liberty. Maarucye, on the other hand, would be a favourable target of the Sons, and a large one too, along with Cristae.

After a moment of quiet thinking, the Aubature addressed the Slimefella a second time.
"Since we're equal in stature right now, do you think we should take up the flanks? Or could we advance together?"

"Oh yeah. The layout is pretty much in their favor. The compound is located on top of a hill, and except the grove they're dropping us into, there would be little to no vegetation. The rains practicly drowns any plantlife. So I need you two,-John pointed at Maarucye and Miles- to be on your guard. I want them dead before they even spot us." John reinforced his statement by pointing at their sniper rifles respectivly.
The shuttle now touched the ground, resulting in a faint tremor through the cargo bay. The door opened with a loud creek and the furious rain could be heard in its fullest. The murky trees were dead and large mushrooms covered most of the ground.
John secured a bandolier full with magazines, as well as a light, compact submachine gun. His Mach 5's electric slugs would only hurt himself under the rain, and he had therefore decided to use his LC-11.
"We'll take it slow from here. We don't want to rush in to an army of lizards. Try to stay hidden and be careful, but you're free to as you wish as long as it doesn't jeopardize the operation. Clear?" John said through his helmet and walked out.
His feet sank down an inch through the mud, and it only took a few seconds before he was drenched in water. And each time he walked on one of the mushrooms, did they spew out clouds of yellow spores that quickly was pushed down by the rain. Outside the grove, a large plain could be seen, and beyond it a small hill with the silhouette of a large compound stuck in a nearby mountain.

Cris controlled the mech to follow after John. As soon as she moved out from the ship's interior, rain began pouring down on it's hull. Both the noise it made and the mission ahead gave her plenty a reason to be nervous. Nevertheless, she pushed on after him, taking care not to end up in any deep quicksand-like mud, as sinking would surley hinder the team's progress.

"Fine by me," Maarucye said quietly. As the landing ramp creaked open, he pulled the book-sized rectangular pod off his left leg and pulled a small, spring-loaded lever. Almost as fast as a blink, but not quite there yet, a two foot long barrel extruded from one side of the pod, divided every inch or so by an inch like a spine, with a two inch long suppressor at the end. Running through and connecting all the inch long segments was an inner tube that supported them. A narrow scope rose out of the side of the pod adjacent to that of the barrel, expanding to a more appropriate diameter as it escaped from the confines of the small metal box.

A narrow section of the side opposite that of the barrel folded down to form a handle, complete with a trigger, and occupying the space where it most recently was, was a curved piece of metal, just a short crescent. This extended from the pod by way of a scissor jack, forming a stock. Maarucye pulled a magazine of bullets from under the curved armour on his chest and rammed it into the only side of the pod that nothing had come out of yet. The end result was a very skinny looking sniper rifle.

He held the black weapon with both hands — that is, his right hand and his left claw-like pincer — and jumped out of the landing ramp. With an embarrassing SHLOOORP he sank waist-deep into the mud. He twisted around and struggled, but he couldn't budge. W3RM hopped off the ramp after him, but landed on the more solid ground where John had left assuring footprints. He sighed at Maarucye.

"I think I hit the bottom," the cyborg observed, looking down at the black puddle of mud that had engulfed his waist, "can you help me out?"

The former Dreadzone contestant sighed again and looked around himself. It was a good thing they had landed near a grove of murky trees. He held out his right hand, and, expanding almost from nothing like his machine gun, a frightening blue mace appeared. With one end of his mitt-like armour glove, where the index finger would be, he pressed a small button at the top end of the guarded handle, and he immediately swung the ferocious weapon sideways at the trees. Maarucye flinched at the motion.

The barbed ball of the mace swung over at the trees, connected to the handle by a curling rope of blue light, as it appeared, and wrapped around the trunk of a tree several times. The sluggish reptile offered the handle to Maarucye. When he didn't make a move to take it, W3RM placed it in his hand and let go of the button.

Instantly, the half-robotic creature was hauled out of the mud as the mace retracted itself, going as far as two metres before his weight prevented any further movement, but it was enough: he was out. With a grunt, W3RM took the mace back from Maarucye, and with a deft flick, retracted the weapon. The head of the mace whirled around the tree a few times before it zoomed back to the handle. W3RM collapsed it and put it away, drawing his two Raptor machine guns instead.

Maarucye got straight back up and held the sniper rifle up to his cheek. His right, organic eye was hidden behind a tinted lens the same size as his robotic one, mainly to balance out his appearance, but also to avoid bright glares, so it wasn't useful in the dark, foggy swamp. He lifted it up and out of the way on a small hinge, revealing a yellow eye with a slitted pupil. He pressed it up to the scope of the rifle and scanned the area for hostiles. He slowly advanced forwards.

W3RM was already hunched over, creeping through the mud with both Raptors held up, ready to shoot.

"You know the concept of stealth, right?" John whispered to the aurbature and the reptilian mercs. He was currently kneeling beside one of the last dead trees. About 10 meters from his position two reptilians stood guard.
Not much was seen of their bodies as they were covered by plastic ponchos. But short fat tails could be seen from the poncho and their hidious faces was fully seen.
The faces resembled a moray's, with thick greyish plates and teeth that didn't fir in their mouths, and therefore sprouted out from their jaws in any direction. In each of their three fingered, long clawed hands lay a bulky rifle made by a mix of steel and wood.
The mercenaries had been lucky that the sentinels hadn't heard them. They were themselves arguing over something.
"Why do we have to stay guard here?!" One of them spat out, drool slippering down its chin.
"Becuase Jakarr, said so." The other one, simingly larger than the first sprout out.
"But it's wet. You know I get this itch when I get wet." The smaller guard nagged on.
"Quit your pestering! Jakarr and his organization have agreed to give Sons of Liberty their support if we do this. That includes YOU doing YOUR JOB." The larger one growled back. It continued by sniffing in the air.
"It smells wierd today. Doesn't it?"

Arthur quickly made his way towards the others, his segmented toes splayed out in the mud, preventing him from sinking. The rain beat against his tough, chitinous, wasp patterned shell. His tall and hulking build made it difficult for him to hide, but he crouched as low as he could. He glanced over at the guards, his eyes narrowing, and produced a few disgusted clicks.

He looked around at the mercenaries, and decided that now would be a preferable time to talk. "How many of these things are there?" Arthur formed his words with a series of low, guttural growls and clicks. He readied his weapon, placing his fingers on the trigger of his assault rifle, activating the gun. The small silver canisters jutted out, producing a quite high-pitched ping, as small rings of blue light filled the grooves around them.

Struggling through very deep swamp ponds was not Miles's idea of fun. As soon as their ship landed, she got so excited that Miles litterly jumped out before the others could come out and landed into one of the ponds. The damp water was up to her waist.

"Well this is embarssing. I haven't been out for at least a minute and already I'm being a moron."

Miles tried to keep up with her commading officer John but when your having to move through a damp murkey swamp like this, it an't no catwalk. She didn't want to let some water get the better of her. For most of the trek, Miles waded her way. She kept Locutter at the ready while yelling for a bit of help just to get out of the last swamp pond.

Cristae noticed Miles's struggling in the thick mud. She moved her mech over and held out one of its arms to pull her out. "Careful, You really don't want to get stuck in there!" she said. Cris didn't want any of her teamates falling in the mud, despite the fact that she was the only one who would be greatly damaged by it.

She then got behind a large rock, and tilted the mech's body slightly to match the direction of the pouring rain so it makes the least ammount of noise as possible. She then looked at her teammates. "Okay, what happens now?" she asked, awaiting orders.

Miles saw Cristae's mech reaching out to her and grabbed it's hand, hauling herself free from the pond's grip.

"Thanks for the help and yeah I'll do my best not to do that kind of thing again (^^')."

Eventually after 5 minutes of being able to move faster, Miles found a rather nice large rock and hid behind it. She looked at her teammates for any ideas on what was the plan.

"Right how are we going to do this does anyone know?"

Maarucye scanned the area, slowly panning his rifle's scope left and right over the silhouette of the mining compound, while slowly moving forward. Even though he was walking at a snail's pace, he could already hear the annoying scrape of soil in his joints through the rain.

After a tense moment, however, he could begin to make out shapes through the rain, and then, voices. They did not belong to any of the mercenaries present, so he knelt down on the muddy ground and lined up a shot.

W3RM heard Arthur, Cristae and Miles's questions, and began to answer them, talking for the first time in their company after hours of going over what he knew of them: their names. His voice was like a lean snarl, but it was definitely succinct. "I can see about three of them, and they're arguing. I think that, before they notice us, we should ambush them. Cristae, if you can surprise them and draw their attention, Miles, Arthur and I can go around either side and-"

VWACK!

W3RM whirled around angrily to behold Maarucye, aiming his rifle at the guards by the compound, a thin trail of smoke wafting out of the suppressor of his weapon. Before the reptile could intervene, Maarucye let off another shot at the guards, trying to take out as many as he could before the alarm was raised — perhaps, before the alarm could be raised.

"Ah, what the hell. Perhaps you should join him, Miles. Still up for trying to surprise them, Cristae?" He gripped his Dual Raptors tightly with both mitted hands.

John cursed at the aurbature's inpatience, as he saw the smaller one of the guards go down with a neck shot. As well as he heard the screams from the compound around 100 meters away. He aimed for the larger reptilian sentinel which had reacted with an agility no one would have expected.
The foul lizard had immediatly got down on all four, when the first shoot rang through the rain, and had ran to a nearby stone taking cover from any other sniper fire.
It then procceded by picking up an old looking radio and growled in it.

"We got mercs like Jakarr said. Activate the trap. NOW!"

Before the reptilian could say anything else, he got shot through his chest by a burst of fire from John. They seemed to lack any armor or shielding.

A sound increased its frequency in the grove, like engines warming up for an overload.
"Get out of the grove! Now!" John screamed to the other mercs.

Of course. Why not go with a sarcastic, hotheaded cyborg like Maarucye.

Thankfully Miles is the athlectic type so it's no surprise she'll catch up to him. Whatever the cyborg missed, Miles took care of them with her Locutter. She had to be careful she didn't allow them to deal a blow on her and mainly her shoulders. Otherwise Miles will be useless for ages (and she does not want that to happen). Maarucye was enjoying himself so much he didn't realized he was well ahead from the group. Miles yelled to get the big dope's attention.

"Maarucye get back here or at least stay there till we catch up!"

Whatever she was about to say next, a sound increased it's frequency in the grove as if an engine of some sort is warming up for an overload.

"Get out of the grove! Now!" John screamed to the other mercs.

Miles didn't argue but she had to get Maarucye out of there first. She couldn't just leave him there even if the guy is annoying.

Arthur scrambled out of the grove, tripping over his feet a couple of times. He glanced frantically behind himself.

"Now that we're in this mess, how are we going to get out?" Arthur asked hopelessly, his set of multiple, insect-like jaws and palps garbled his words, making him just barely understandable.

In the wide grove, three identical tripod stanced machines started to warm up. The sound that had been overheard was their generators. From the middle of a dish-like main body a long metal coil was lowered down the length of the machines, half a meter. On all three devices, the coils sparked with electricity.
On small screens deep red symbols flashed, as well as a series of numbers.

0:0:34

0:0:33

The jolt of electricity would fry anything in the grove and the seconds ticked down at a steady rate.

"Maarucye get back here or at least stay there till we catch up!"

The bulky Aurabure looked back to see Miles yelling at him. Such a subtle sniper. He, however, had looked away from his targets long enough, should they already be preparing to return fire. That was not the case, unfortunately. As he turned to look back through the scope of his sniper rifle, a low hum sounded throughout the grove. It grew in frequency, like a charging turbine, before Maarucye was sure it was some sort of engine.

"Get out of the grove! Now!" John screamed. Maarucye didn't need a second hint. He collapsed his rifle again — the barrel, stock, scope and handle all folding and retracting into the book-sized pod — and held it above his head, breaking into a run. It was hard, but he used his robotic pincer of a left hand to grip the dead trees and keep himself above the ground.

W3RM followed suit with his Dual Raptors and ran, but a lot faster than Maarucye. He was almost swinging off the tree trunks as he dashed for the edge of the grove, stepping only on the soil around the roots.

Cristae was becoming tense. She charged out of the grove, firearms ready incase anything drastic happened.

As soon as the cyborg made the smart choice of getting out of there, Miles did the same thing and got into a position close enough to the bug alien Arthur and the slug dragon W3RM. She prepared herself and took out her T-42 a pistol. Now you think this make would not be different but surprisingly it is. True they might not have heavy firepower but they are capable of leaving burning sting marks if aimed well at the limbs. This tiny weapon is not to be underestimated.

The grove got lit up by a lightning blue shimmer. It was followed by the smell of ozon and burned wood. The water had been instantly electrified and some of the dead trees had catched fire.
About four flashlights around the compound fixed themselves on the grove and closed in steadily.
"They must think that we're dead." John said, as he looked at the four flashligts closing in.
He looked back at the compound. It cast a shadow over the small hill and was surrounded by a fortress looking wall, built by regular bricks and concrete. The front gate was open, and a courtyard could briefly be seen behind the curtain of rain.
"I say we take our chances and get to the compound." John said to the rest of the mercenaries, while reloading his submachine gun.

"I'm right behind you sir."

Miles readied her T-42 and slowly rose up where she can see their enemies yet still hide from their view. Calmly she breathed, waiting for the right moment.
