| I found this to be an interesting read. - Quote :
Scientists tracked the development and reproduction of the microscopic roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans through 12 generations on the International Space Station. Studying these space-hardened worms could help humans deal with the rigors and risks of the long trip to Mars, researchers said.
"We have been able to show that worms can grow and reproduce in space for long enough to reach another planet, and that we can remotely monitor their health." SPACE WORMS FROM STAR WARS GAIS You may find the full article Here

| Yaay, and interesting topic! I'm sure these worms could help Humans. While they think they're the masters of nature, Humans wouldn't have got anywhere on Earth without their "animal" companions (Humans would probably still be hunter-gatherers if it wasn't for Dogs). So I don't see why getting anywhere in Space would be different. | |

| Ah yes. Proof once again that Star Wars is real.
+Respect for scientists.
Seriously, though, this is an interesting topic - or at least, it could certainly spark into one. Though at the moment it seems to be a rather uninteresting field of study, I mean, worms? it can be prove to be an instrumental part of future space exploration and habitation, as I see it. Personally, maybe this is just my crappy opinion, I don't believe the article will truly be interesting until we find out something and "use" these worms to our advantage.
It's rather exciting already, though, in that we've completely mapped out the genome of this worm, in that it's far easier to perceive changes to the structure. Further, I believe DarkFish's point is a good one - humans have been greatly aided by animals throughout the history of our civilization...or lack thereof. I hope to see more news concerning the creatures and their various adventures into space. Worms XI: Intergalactic Combat?

| With Drew, Darkfish and 3D I agree. This will get interesting when we can find something to do with the worms. My greatest guess would be to change the soil composition to something akin to Earth's, and perhaps we may be able to grow plants there in some kind of greenhouse. Of course, if this is to help with the colonization of Mars, the worms may have to do more than live in the ground and do worm things. Mars is constantly whipped by high speed winds, last time I checked, and the atmosphere is very different to Earth's. It is further away from the Sun than Earth is and thus colder. Maybe some sort of intentional greenhouse effect will heat it up. Nevertheless, there is a long way to go before we can even consider making Mars our new home, but the worms will help us take our first steps (or wriggles ) | |
