Welcome to Gelatino's Advice Corner! I may not have a thousand subs, but I have a few years of experience on Spore and have learned a few things. If you need a piece of advice about adventure making, playing, game mechanics, or Spore in general, ask away! I'll try my best to answer your question. In addition, others may answer questions if they know the answer.

UPDATE: This has been moved to the Adventure Corner. Yayz!

You have to go into test mode to make them disappear. If you open the cheat menu with Ctrl+Shift+C, and type in "freecam" you can move the camera away from the captain so you can get a really good angled shot. This should help you get very good screenshots to use for title images.

By the way, here's a piece of advice to everybody, especially the unpopular creators: If you want to receive lots of comments, you have to release lots of creations and comment on others a lot. By releasing lots of creations, there is always fresh content for your followers to critique so they will always want to look at your page to get more. When you comment on people, even fairly popular creators, they will want to thank you for the comment. They go to your page and find a good creation to comment on, and while they're there they may even like your creations and subscribe to you. These are the tips I use to get lots of comments and get subscribers.

I release new creations every week and to no avail, but I'll try the comment tactic.

When commenting other creators in hopes of being commented back, it is more effective to comment on unpopular creators. They will be much more appreciative.

Here's a random adventure-building tip I just thought of: If you are making a maze, it would be cool if you could see where you are going on the mini map, right? But maze walls are usually made out of buildings or gates, which don't show up on the map. Well, the solution is simple: before you put down all your buildings, use the terraforming editor to make shallow ditches where the maze walls will be. These will show up on the map. I have never tried this, so I don't know if it works, but it seems like it should. Try it sometime and tell me if it works.

Well, my first piece of advice on making human creations, especially creatures: DON'T. You should be creative at making your creatures, not just copy off of the natural history of our own planet. Trust me, it is a mistake.

But if you need advice making humanoid forms in your own unique creatures, I suppose I have a few points to help you.
  1. Make sure you get the legs right. When making a Spore creature, it is very common for someone to just take a limb and stick it on a body and be done with it. This, however, does not look good at all making humanoid shapes. I suggest you take the bottom spine segment, where the legs will go, and shrink it down to a small size, then take a leg and attach it to the small segment, enlarging the hip joint until the two legs melt together a little.
  2. The thigh bones are the longest bones in the body. Remember that the legs make up about half the height of the human body, and the femur is the longest bone. Make sure that the torso doesn't get too long, or your creature will look like a midget.
  3. If you're trying to make your creature very similar to a human, keep in mind the size of the head. Depending on your creature, you may want to use an entire mouth part for the head, or you may want to take a piece of the spine and add a mouth part onto that. Just remember, the size of the head will be very important in how people view your creature.
  4. Don't be afraid to experiment with the shape of the spine. It is probably best to avoid making the spine of your creature completely straight, as this will look bad in the end. One of our very own GAC members, and my own brother, Lark98, has a problem with making the spines of his creatures straight. So don't do it!

Of course, those are not all the tips. Those are just a couple I could think of on short notice. But make sure you pay attention to them anyway!

Humans... the holy grail of SPORE creations. Nice tips, Gelatino95. I was just contemplating that if you want to make a good human, usually you build the mouth out of something other than a mouth, and hide the real mouth someplace else. (Since the mouths are usually too big)

I've been having trouble drawing attention to my GroxQuest series. The few people who've played them seemed to really like them, but I need more regulars. Do you have any tips?

Here's the link.

I think I have a few tips for you...
  1. Get the attention of a popular creator. Maybe if a popular creator plays your adventure, their subs will see that on their recent activity. Then people will search the adventure on the Sporepedia. What would be even better is if they advertise your series with a creation, but that's unlikely.
  2. Get anybody else's attention. A good way to do this is to comment on and rate other people's creations. More often than not, people will return the favor by checking out your page. Maybe they'll see your adventure.
  3. Advertise yourself. Make a creation with the links to your adventures in the description. Advertise it on here or on the Sporum. (Here is better) Ask people to uprate the creation so it will get attention. We have actually gotten one of our GAC official creations on the MPN by having everybody uprate it.

That's about all I can think of... you can think of some ideas on your own. If you want, I'd be glad to uprate all of your adventures. Just send me all the links.

I am not letting this thread die. Remember everybody, I still give out advice to anybody who needs it.

Anyway, here's a piece of advice: When making a creature, the "Necrye" part (creepy and cute) is very flexible. First of all, it can completely change color to the detail color that you set for your creature. Also, it is very basic and can be manipulated easily. You can add a part inside to add a pupil, or you can add an ever so useful Knurl Down part to make eyebrows (is there anything that KDs can't do?) Just remember that when making a creature...

Here's an example of that:

Yeah but Necryes are high on complexity. Actually, all the C&C parts are high on complexity. Wondering

Hmm... realistic creations is a very broad topic. But I suppose I could give you a few tips on it.

1. Use a reference picture. Google search whatever you're looking for and keep it on your screen as you create it in whatever editor you use. If you're not already doing it, I suggest that you switch your Spore to window mode rather than full-screen. Make sure you pay careful attention to whatever details are essential to making the creation look realistic.

2. Be as detailed as possible. If the creation that you're trying to make is detailed, add on as many details as you can until the complexity fills out. Conversely, if you're making a very simple creation, then don't add too many parts.

3. Make creative use of parts. As an experienced Spore creator, you probably know already that you don't have to use the parts for their intended purposes. Experiment for a while and find out what you can use certain parts for, and maybe look at innovative creators such as Parkaboy to find out how they use parts for creative purposes.

Overall, accuracy is the key to making realistic things. Unless, of course, you're trying to make something that looks real, but isn't. In that case, look at the scaling of real-world objects, meaning pay close attention to what size the details are in relation to the entire object. That should help immensely in making things that look realistic. Another way of saying that is, don't make your creations look cartoony. Aspects that make a creation "Cartoony" include overly vibrant colors and exaggerated details and sizes.

EDIT: Finally, after four months, this thread has reached its second page. Dormancy has really caught up with it, I guess.

What about it? I thought I covered that in my response. Just go for accuracy, and you're all set. One thing I might add, though, is don't be afraid to use flat or near-flat textures for buildings and vehicles. Many people add complicated textures to make their creations look complex, but instead end up looking like big jumbles of poop.

PostSubject: Re: Gelatino's Advice Corner   Gelatino's Advice Corner EmptySun Jan 16, 2011 7:51 pm

Here's a cool trick to use in your adventures: How to make a door that requires three keys to enter, but you can keep track of how many keys you have used by looking at the door.

Here's how it works: First, make a big old door. As you're making that door, add on some little detail parts. There must be three of them. These are the parts that will indicate how many keys have been used. Example:
Gelatino's Advice Corner 500702032890_lrg
(Those three circles on the front are the indicators)

Now, you have to save three more versions of this door. Except you have to take off two of the indicators for each one, leaving one different indicator for each door. Examples:
Gelatino's Advice Corner 500701991538Gelatino's Advice Corner 500701991559Gelatino's Advice Corner 500701991566

Now, in your adventure, choose three gates of the same color and disguise them as each of these three gates. After that, just put all three gates in the adventure and make sure that they are right in the same place, perfectly lined up. If they are lined up properly, then it should look like the door with all three indicators.

Now here's the fun part: If you take a key to the door, then only one of the indicators will disappear. That means that if you use one key, then there will be two left. If you use two keys, then there will be one left. And when you use all three keys, the door will disappear and you can get through.

I hope that this trick helps you in your adventures.
